TV AS WE KNOW IT IS FADING AWAY, STUDY SUGGESTS A new study lends credence to predictions that eventually so- called appointment television will become a thing of the past and that viewers will eventually be able to watch any program they want any time they want via the Internet. The study by Knowledge Networks indicates that in just the past three years viewing complete TV shows via the Internet has tripled, growing from 8 percent to 22 percent among persons 13-54 and from 12 percent to 30 percent among those 18-34. The study also indicated that nearly one in four (22 percent) of all viewers are watching TV shows online, either via streaming or downloading video. In a statement, Knowledge Networks exec David Tice said, "The small but notable level of people watching TV programs via the Internet on regular TV sets suggests that the convergence of the two screens for mainstream audiences may finally be on the horizon.
Growing numbers of 'connected TVs' -- those that access the Internet -- are making this option increasingly user-friendly. The fact that over one-third of TV homes now have a bundled TV/Internet service package is no doubt accelerating this blurring of boundaries."

TV-INTERNET MULTITASKERS INCREASING
The number of people watching TV and accessing the Internet simultaneously grew only 2.7 percent during 2009 to 134.06 million, but those people increased their simultaneous TV/Internet use 34.5 percent, according to the annual Nielsen report on media multitasking ("Three Screen Report") published today (Monday). The report indicated that 59 percent of TV viewers use the Internet at least once a month while also watching TV. In a statement, Nielsen's media product leader Matt O'Grady said:
"The initial fear was that Internet and mobile video and entertainment would slowly cannibalize traditional TV viewing, but the steady trend of increased TV viewership alongside expanded simultaneous usage argues something quite different."

I started multi-tasking on the Internet while watching television in the last nineties, when it took FOREVER for a web page to come up. Instead of staring at the computer while I waited, I arranged my livingroom so that the television was within easy viewing distance from where I sat at my desk. I wonder how many other people did it for that same reason?
